Update on Ben Wolverton

Today is the 39th day since Ben fell off of his longboard.

Ben rested today in the hospital--no long walks, though he did get to go out in his wheelchair and get some sun.

The big news of the day is that Ben got his feeding tube out!

He's graduated to eating solids and drinking his own water. Mary ran out and got Ben some more chicken nuggets for lunch, and so we have a picture of him smiling--with food in his mouth. Ugh.

Ben loves chicken McNuggets, by the way. A few months ago, McDonalds had a big sale, and Ben went out and invested in 40 of them, so that he could sneak them between meals. Ben has been eating pretty much nonstop for the past two years. He's currently 6'4", the tallest person in our family, but he has lost a lot of weight while in the hospital. I believe that he is currently only about 175 pounds, down about 25 pounds from when he got hurt..

We're pretty much set for the flight to Primary Children's Medical Center on Monday, so that we can begin his rehabilitation. There, I think that Ben will get begin rehab, but will soon go into surgery to have his "skull flaps" replaced--the two pieces of skull that are currently stored in his stomach.

In this picture, you can see the indentations in his skull very well. The swelling on his brain keeps receding, and it's really only in the back of his skull, on the left-hand side, where he has any swelling left at all.
