Update on Ben Wolverton

Today marks the 40th day since Ben fell off of his longboard. For me, that's sort of a landmark day for a couple of reasons. You see, on day 18 I found that we had hit the $500,000 mark in expenses, and I figured that by day 40, we would be close to the $1 million mark.

Beyond that, two weeks ago Ben had lapsed into a second coma, and his pneumonia was bad enough that I suspected that he would die that night. If he survived, I expected that he might be weeks learning how to talk again, or walk. However, he came out of it a couple of days later and has improved by leaps and bounds ever since.

So today, I went with Ben's brother Spencer, and his sister Danielle, and we took mom out to breakfast and gave her her Mother's Day gifts.

Then we got a couple of attendants to help Ben exercise, and with the aid of his walker he was able to circle the nurse's station twice (sitting down to rest three times). Then we took him out into the sun.

This totally wore him out. He took a nap for a couple of hours, then we got him some Chinese food for dinner. Ben is a big fan of pot stickers, but only ate a couple. He hasn't had much of an appetite lately, and has lost 43 pounds since he went into the hospital.

While we were outside with Ben, he need to use the restroom. So Spencer wheeled him over to the nearest one. Just as they were wheeling through the door, and orderly shouted at Spencer, "You can't take that girl into the men's room!"

Ben got pretty upset. He's huge, has no breasts, and has short hair. Why the orderly thought that he was a girl, I don't know. You be the judge.

The pictures show Spencer, Ben, and Danielle Wolverton with me, followed by Ben with one of his nurses, Brandon.
