Update on Ben Wolverton

Today is the 53rd day since Ben fell from his longboard.

Yesterday Ben was feeling down. I talked to him about setting a goal of learning to walk again, and he hung his head and said mournfully, "I can't figure out how I learned to walk the first time."

Ben seems to have lots of strength, but he's having a hard time with coordination.

To help build him up, we took him out for a couple of hours yesterday--visiting the Hires Big H hamburger restaurant in Salt Lake (wonderful burgers on freshly made buns). Then we took him to the ice-cream social at Conduit.

We had a great time last night, but our son Spencer is going to be leaving to go on a mission, so this morning we put Ben into the care of his older sister, Lola.

During physical therapy today, Ben's therapist got him to walk just a bit, while holding onto him. Then Lola took Ben out to the Subway in the morning, and to the park in the afternoon, and got him to walk quite a bit--from the car to his walker, then to an IMAX theater, and so on. So Ben has begun taking his first few steps.

We're hoping that we can continue to get him up and walking more each day. If we can get him walking and swallowing, we may be able to bring him home in a few days and begin his outpatient care.

When I got home today, I got some of our first medical bills. Yikes! Revising my estimate so far from 1.1 to 1.2 million dollars.
