Update on Ben Wolverton

Today is the 47th day since Ben fell off of his longboard.

Yesterday we were going to take Ben downtown on an adventure, but our car battery died. So we wheeled him all around the hospital grounds and the surrounding neighborhood. It was a bit too cold and kept threatening to rain, but it was nice to get out of the hospital for awhile.

Ben is having a grueling morning of therapy today. This morning in speech therapy, he read the instructions to a game and the had to explain how to play. For physical therapy, they doubled his exercise. Then this afternoon, they had him practice hitting a ball with a bat, then pick up his own balls when he was done.

The music therapist came in and saw that he was wearing a t-shirt for the band "Imagine Dragons," so she began teaching him to play the song "Radioactive." Both the thereapist and I were amazed that he could still play the guitar at all. Not only could he play it, but he did it well enough so that I could recognize the song. So she left a guitar for him to practice with. He'll need some work, but I think he should get it back just fine.

Tomorrow morning, Ben is scheduled for surgery to get his "skull flaps" reattached. This will be a four-hour surgery, roughly, which makes sense--it took about that long to take them out.

I watched another young man in therapy today who had been hit by a car. His injuries were much like Ben's, but he is still working on learning to breathe and speak. I really feel lucky to see Ben healing so well.
