Update on Ben Wolverton

Today is the 48th day since Ben fell off of his longboard.

Ben was scheduled for surgery early this morning to get his bone flaps (the pieces of his skull that have been stored in his stomach) returned to his skull. However, the surgery didn't happen until about 11:00 A.M. All in all, he spent about 4 1/2 hours in surgery, then another hour in recovery, so Ben just got back to his room a few minutes ago.

The surgery went well. The surgeon got the bones out of Ben's stomach just fine, cleaned them off, and then used little titanium screws to put the skull fragments back in place. Then he sewed everything back. As far as the scars went, he made today's incisions just over the old ones, so that Ben has some fancy new scars and staples in his head.

Earlier today, Ben got to have the music therapists come in and play the guitar with him, so he seemed very pleased with that.

In this picture, you can see the new incisions, and you can see the shunts on the back of his head where the blood is draining from his wound. Unlike his previous surgeries, Ben didn't need a transfusion. But he is looking a bit pale.
