Update on Ben Wolverton

Today is the 21st day since Ben's longboarding accident. Ben is waking up today more than ever. He has made some new progress.

First, he is moving his hands and legs much more purposefully, using his left hand to explore his stitches on his head, and his ear. He keeps wanting to yank off the oxygen feed that is strapped to his ear.

He's also been looking around a bit more, with his eyes actually following us. When I first came in, he seemed to focus on me for at least 30 seconds. His nurse says that that is his next goal, to get him to "look at you with more than a glassy stare." But Ben is sixteen. How can you expect anything more than a glassy-eyed stare?

Beyond that, Ben is now moaning and yawning. Yesterday they had him on morphine all day, but it has now been 8 and 1/2 hours since he's had any of the heavy-duty meds. So they're trying to keep him awake during the day now, prepping him for re-hab, then let him sleep at night.

Ben is squirming a lot, kicking his legs, and so on. We're going to try some music on him in a bit, and we've got the television picture on to give him some visual stimulation.
